GE and Plainville High School Partner in Job-Shadowing Program
April 6, 2015
PLAINVILLE, Conn. — April 6, 2015 — Twenty-one Plainville High School students recently visited GE’s Industrial Solutions business (NYSE: GE) in Plainville for a firsthand look at the site’s New Product Introduction (NPI) Accelerator Lab and the advanced technologies engineers are using to accelerate product development.
Coordinated with Plainville High School’s program, “Shadowing for Success,” the GE tour was designed to complement the program’s mission to bring 11th and 12th grade students together with business professionals to explore occupations. The students toured the 17,000-square-foot NPI Accelerator Lab and learned how engineers develop solutions for customers. Collaboration between engineers and customers strengthens GE's ability to respond quicker to changing market conditions. The lab includes a team room, high-tech machine shop with 3-D printing capabilities, product teardown area and pilot-run production area.
“Partnering with Plainville schools is one of the ways GE invests in its local communities and educates young minds on how engineering can change the world through innovation and problem-solving,” said John Legato, engineering and technology program leader, GE’s Industrial Solutions business. “Our goal is to get students excited about the possibilities in the hopes that some of them will decide to pursue a career in engineering.”
During the panel discussion with six engineers, students had the opportunity to ask questions and to gain valuable information about what a day in the life of an engineer is like at GE.
“We are extremely fortunate to have GE as a corporate neighbor and ally to our Plainville High School educational programs," said Plainville High School Principal Steven LePage. “A primary focus at Plainville High School is to provide rigorous and engaging opportunities for our students while building relevance and real-world context. Opportunities such as these provided by GE are invaluable to our students, and we thank them for their outreach and support.”
In addition to this visit, GE also will be hosting other job-shadowing opportunities for Plainville students who are interested in technology and engineering.
“GE has a long history of working with our school system,” added Superintendent of Plainville Community Schools Dr. Jeffrey Kitching. “This is a new and exciting addition to that collaboration, and I thank GE for their willingness to once again step up as a corporate and community partner.”
